St. Helena Center for Health's programs and expertise draw clients from all over the world. Staff members have built the multidisciplinary Transformations program on their experience in nutrition, lifestyle change and weight management as well as St. Helena Hospital's expertise in medical care.

Transformations will take advantage of the Center's Napa Valley setting during excursions to supermarkets and a fine restaurant. Clients will also be able to enjoy walks on beautiful, wooded Napa Valley trails and hills.

In addition to walks, daily strength training and water exercise will help clients jump-start their metabolisms. Transformations will teach participants how to use aerobic activity, anaerobic activity and rest to reinforce their weight loss and weight maintenance goals. Participants will be monitored with measurements of heart rate reserve, which can demonstrate fitness progress before external physical changes are apparent.

Napa Valley is a destination renowned for fine dining, and Transformations will reflect this environment. An experienced chef will work with the Center's highly trained dietitian, who will prepare clients for their return home by illustrating normal serving sizes and teaching them to modify recipes, order wisely in any restaurant, make smart choices in supermarkets and cook healthy meals in the Center's teaching kitchen

Services and tools to support participants include a masseuse who will be available for massage during some of the sessions, audiotapes on the psychology of dieting, videotapes on diet and exercise, spiritual sessions, support sessions, journaling, weight records, a journal for writing about experiences in the program, a recipe book, a heart rate monitor and a pedometer.

Participants will also receive recipes, nutritional software and other products to take home that will help them continue the program. In addition, the transition home will be planned carefully, and clients will continue to receive support and coaching after returning home.

Learning, experiencing and practicing the Transformations skills and strategies in the Center for Health's medical environment will help ensure that participants adopt a lifestyle that promotes fat loss, prevents weight gain and enhances general health for life. Together, the program's elements will provide an extraordinary degree of support for long-term success.
